Our team met for practice last night with an attitude of quiet discouragement and less quiet frustration. On top of getting whomped by a bunch of little white guys, the church at which we practiced had moved us from their nice, green field to the back corner of their property, which was composed largely of an old softball field. You appreciate grass much more after being tackled on pavement-like dirt. We went through our typical warm-up drills/stretching in total silence, broken only by an occasional "ouch" when someone found a tight muscle. Then we broke up into three groups: linemen went to go do their drills with their coach, and then the offense and defense started going through their formations and plays. Our new head coach (Coach Chuck) watched the defense (of which I was a part of) make some adjustments that our defensive coach (Coach Dean) thought would help us and simplify things. They did just that, but Coach Chuck, who is suppose to deal with the offense ONLY, started criticizing Coach Dean in what he was doing.
The casual discussion intensified into a strained argument after about five minutes. Coach Dean, sick of the argument, finally said, "Coach, just let me run the defense and you run the offense." Coach Chuck responded, "Whatever you say, Dean, but I am going to have fun picking you defense apart." You should NEVER talk like that in front of your players to a fellow coach. That lowers their respect for the entire staff and encourages back-talking and a lapse in discipline. Anyway, when we got into our huddles, Coach Dean, who is a very laid back and relaxed kind of a guy said, "I want you guys to go out their and put this offense on their ******* ******. You understand?!" All of us players were like, "Whoa.," since this coach had never gotten into our faces like this before. He was so mad. So we broke huddle, and lined up.
And we DESTROYED the offense. We played against them for two hours of non-stop football. By the end of that time, the defense had accumulated TWELVE interceptions (5 of which were returned for touchdowns), numerous knock-downs, and a couple of plays where we covered so well that Coach Chuck couldn't find an open man...even after 15 seconds! (In highschool ball, a QB usually has about 5 seconds to throw before he gets sacked.) The offense completed about 10-15 passes in those two hours, and only 2 of them were for more then 10 yards, and NONE of them were touchdowns. It was a great practice, and I believe that Coach Chuck will leave Coach Dean alone to run defense from here on out.
Coach Dean told me that I was going to start varsity defense at cornerback at our next scrimmage, so I am pretty happy about that. Man, I love football.
P.S. I had an interception which I returned for a touchdown, as well as a tip which one of my fellow teamates intercepted.

Yikes. That sounds a little intense. What really makes me laugh is that you ended your post with "Man, I love football." I really can't imagine why.
Nice new picture...it definetely looks a bit more like you than the first one did. How about this one, though: http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b69/TheFacesOfSchola/Summer%20Academy%202007/?action=view¤t=IMG_4661.jpg
Manuel has a good one of you too. It's in his "doffee reactions" series. You look like such a goof. It's hilarious.
Hey! My link didn't work. Pssshhhhh. Well, go to Schola's photobucket and check out the newest picture of you on there. It's pretty funny.
Intense is right. I love the intensity and hype of football. That is one reason it is my favorite sport, especially to play. I love getting excited and pumped up like that. Adrenalin addict, maybe. ;-)
Yeah, I am going to do that. I haven't seen them all yet, but I will try to get one of those pictures from SA up on there soon.
lol, which one is that? I look like a goof in a LOT of those pictures...;-)
An adrenalin addict, huh? That sounds a little extreme. =)
So a Sunday has come and gone and we don't know what your top five songs for the week were. Come on, Eth! I'm always curious as to what music my friends like.
Okay, so maybe it is a *little* extreme...
Geez, I am working on it. Just because I am back and posting doesn't mean I live on this thing like some people *cough*you*cough*. ;-) Just kidding. Thanks for the reminder. I posted!
hey!
watch it buddy. ;D i don't live on this thing. it's so easy just to check your blog any time i'm reading baseball stuff or e-mailing people or looking at pictures. AND...our house feels so empty without scholars around, so every chance i get i will read my friends' blogs or check to see if anyone else has added sa pictures or write e-mails (lots of those...just ask Faith or Claire). you should feel honored that i "live" on this blog.
=)
Sure you do...
And why would you want to check the Orioles scores? Doesn't that get depressing after week two?
;-)
Did I give you my e-mail on your little book thingy? You can have it if you want...
"And why would you want to check the Orioles scores? Doesn't that get depressing after week two?"
Eth, it scares me how provoking you can be sometimes...
;-)
lol, actually, I do. A couple years ago I was struggling with the whole "be careful what you say on e-mail thing because people have a hard time interpreting jokes sometimes" thing...yeah. Lets just put it this way: half of my e-mails were apologies.
;-)
